Island Airport Ferry Named after Marilyn Bell

The Toronto Port Authority announced the winning names selected for the two ferries servicing the Toronto's island airport in its Name the Boats contest last week and the name picked by over 1,000 entries was .... Marilyn Bell.

The new ferry was named this morning after Marilyn Bell a Lakeshore Swim Club and pioneering marathon swimmer.

An already existing vessel will be renamed after Second World War hero David Hornell.  Flight Lieut. David Hornell was a pilot born on the Toronto Islands. He earned the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour in the Commonwealth after saving his crew members when his plane was shot down by German forces.

"The Toronto Port Authority is thrilled that Torontonians have chosen names with such historical significance that reflect the determination and courage for which our city and country is famous," said Geoffrey Wilson, TPA president and CEO.

Marilyn was also given Gold, Silver and Bronze medals along with the meet program from the December Marilyn Bell Classic meet.  She was thrilled and thanked LSC for keepsakes.
