Our Founder

Gus Ryder:

Our founder Gus Ryder established LSC in 1930 as part of his life-long commitment to teaching swimming and life saving.   With a membership at times as large as 700 swimmers, Ryder and the Club taught generations of kids to swim.  Ryder was also devoted to teaching the disabled to swim, making him the father of modern day SWAD swimming in Ontario.

During the 30s and 40s the Club held lessons and practices in a number of locations.  In summer it used Lake Ontario at the foot of 7th Street, the mouth of the Credit River. In winter it used the West End YMCA and Humberside Collegiate.  In 1952 the Club constructed the New Toronto War Memorial Pool (now Gus Ryder Pool) using funds raised by the Ryder and the club.  The pool is now run by the City of Toronto.
